  • Springfield Teachers Union President, Aaron Graves, raised concerns about the long-term deficit in the health insurance fund and questioned why proposed budget cuts appeared to target more teaching positions than administrative roles. 
  • Director of Business, Finance & Operations, Steve Miller clarified that the health insurance fund was included for the first time on the annual financial report, but not on the district's budget. 
  • The board and Director Miller clarified that the projected budget deficit included insurance costs in both last year's and this year's figures, with the deficit increasing from just over $10 million to $21.8 million. 
  • Director Miller confirmed that the projected $21.8 million deficit would remain unchanged even if the insurance fund balance were zero. 
  • Director Miller reported that efforts were underway to eliminate the health insurance fund deficit within the next two years, which would improve the fund balance without affecting the overall budget. 
  • President Austin announced the date of the next regular board meeting and shared upcoming district events, including Memorial Day and high school graduation ceremonies.
