The Durham County Board of Commissioners remembers Judge Willis P. Whichard’s lifelong service and deep ties to the Durham County Library, then welcomes a new library director to lead the system’s next chapter. The board also points residents to key chances to engage on the new Unified Development Ordinance, celebrates major investments in farmland, open space, and public safety, updates RV parking rules, and appoints new members to several advisory boards.

The board unanimously elected a new chair and vice chair, then set plans for a January work session on child welfare procedures. Leaders called for a community-facing briefing with DSS, the courts, and the public defender to clear up misconceptions and explain state requirements.

The council honored departing members, navigated a brief protest during swearing-in, and seated new representatives and a mayor for fresh terms. The council passes an ordinance on filling executive vacancies and rejects proposed amendments to the measure in the wake of the controversial resignation of former Clerk Frank Lesko. Concerns are voiced about the resignation of the Tree Commission.
