Highlights from Durham City Council (NC)

The Durham City Council proclaims future Clyde McPhatter Days, celebrates youth-led work to attract new public works talent, and wrestles with an Environmental Affairs Board appointment alongside a special use permit for the Sunrock Camden concrete plant and its greenway easement. Residents also raise concerns about a sewer easement, while council members call for voting, safer communities, and stronger tree and housing policies.

The Durham City Council hears a sweeping update from the Durham Housing Authority on decades of federal underfunding, RAD conversions, housing bond investments, and efforts to pull a troubled public housing and voucher system back toward stability. Residents, legal advocates, and council members press for greater accountability, better living conditions, and more deeply affordable homes even as new developments rise across the city.

The Durham City Council celebrates moving dozens of residents from homelessness into stable housing, advances key federal housing grants, and takes a firm stand against proposed state constitutional amendments that could shrink local tax power. Council members also debate tax fairness, annexation and development rules, and vote to designate the Cranford-Wannamaker House as a local historic landmark while wrestling with equity in preservation.

The Durham City Council mourns a firefighter lost in a building collapse as the State Bureau of Investigation leads a line‑of‑duty death review, then turns to intense public and council debate over homeless encampment sweeps, data centers, and how to craft a humane, workable policy. Council also weighs funding and environmental justice questions around landfill parks, reshapes City Hall’s public spaces and security, and agrees to advance a resolution opposing proposed state constitutional amendments.
