Commissioners also wrestle with food security cuts, opioid settlement allocations, and how to ensure Durham Public Schools uses county funds transparently and toward a livable wage.

The Orange County Board of Commissioners weighs a 10-year school construction plan that relies on bond funds, growing pay-as-you-go dollars, and nearly three cents in built-in tax increases, while grappling with declining school enrollment. Commissioners also review how to split federal housing funds, prepare for new ADA web accessibility rules, and pause a fire station loan after residents raise transparency concerns.

The Board had conducted two closed sessions, in addition to a short public meeting. It welcomed two public health hires supporting HIV services and community resilience, and approved a proclamation for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. A Commissioner also noted a local resident’s 113th birthday.

The commission detailed a proposal for major property tax exemptions for residents aged 65 and 75, discussed the legislative steps required, and heard a few public concerns about the impact of that proposal. New occupation taxes for short-term accommodations and a land donation for a fire station were also addressed.
