  • The meeting began with the recognition the Student, Teacher, and Employee of the Month recognitions. Other staff were also honored during this period.
  • During his report, Superintendent Lewis described the ribbon cutting for the renovated auditorium at CC Spaulding Elementary School.
  • Also during his report, Superintendent Lewis urged the North Carolina General Assembly to pass a comprehensive budget with educator pay raises.
  • Public comment then began, with one speaker asking for community engagement regarding the fate of the current Durham School of the Arts building.
  • Several members of the public focused their remarks on fears related to ICE presence in and around schools. Many remarks were delivered anonymously through an intermediary out of fear of retaliation by ICE.
  • Several other members of the public spoke out against mold concerns at one school, with one noting how she was presently suffering from a mold-related illness.
  • After public comment, the board discussed the newly constituted Policy Committee. This committee will be responsible for reviewing and proposing amendments to a great number of DPS policies.
  • The Policy Committee announced intention to sort future policy amendments into three tiers, with tier 1 being the most urgent. Tier 1 consists of those mandated for update this school year by the North Carolina General Assembly.

  • Chief Finance Officer Teetor presented results from an employee compensation and benefits satisfaction survey with 592 participants. The survey indicated a fair degree of employee satisfaction generally, but broad dissatisfaction with the amount of compensation received by employees.
  • The board welcomed family members and read a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Elton Martin O'Neill, focusing on O'Neill's significant impact as an educator in Durham Public Schools.
